Want To Be A Light-Bearer?

Every evening this week, our local news has carried a warning and a plea: The Red Cross is

basically out of blood. They have enough blood for one day only and are pleading with the

American people to give blood. When their blood supply is nearly gone, all kinds of surgeries

must be postponed, because the little blood left must be available for emergencies … as long as it

lasts. You know how you see things and sometimes you get that little push to do something – if

only you could?

Well, my first thought was a memory of how, for years, our church had held a blood drive, twice

a year, until the organizers moved away. Now these light-bearers didn’t just do it, they did it

with great joy! My very next thought was that no way could I organize a whole blood drive!

And then a new memory popped up: at my first job, our wonderful boss used to ask us all to go

with him to give blood, each time the Red Cross held a drive in our town. Another light-bearer

in our midst! Then that still, small voice broke into my mind, saying: “I didn’t ask you to run a

blood drive, I asked you to give blood!”

So, in the spirit of my amazing first boss, I’m asking you, my friends: will you come too? Will

you be a light-bearer too, and make time to donate your blood to the Red Cross? You might even

save a life… It’s easier than I thought: Just look up “Red Cross donation centers, or Red Cross

blood drives near me on your phone or computer… they’re closer than you think. Let’s do it!
